Lionel Messi was substituted in the 76th minute as PSG beat Lyon with a late Mauro Icardi header on Sunday night.

Lionel Messi's frustrating start to life in the French Ligue 1 continued on Sunday with the Argentine extending it to his new side's manager in their clash with Olympique Lyon. The 34-year-old playmaker was subbed off in the 75th minute after failing to make a significant contribution in his side's win and ended up snubbing his coach Mauricio Pochettino's handshake on his way to the bench.

Indeed, it was not for the lack of trying by the six-time Ballon d'Or winner as he came close to grabbing his first goal of his spell in France but saw his effort from a free-kick hitting the crossbar. He also came close on several occasions but was denied at every instance. Rather unfortunately, his side went behind right in his presence after Lucas Paquetá handed Lyon the breakthrough goal in the early minutes of the second half.

However, the lead did not last for long with Angel Di Maria converting a penalty to restore parity. Not long after the goal, the Argentine winger and his national team skipper were replaced by Mauro Icardi and Hakimi Achraf respectively as PSG pursued a winner with just 15 minutes of action left. In the end, Icardi's goal in the third minute of additional time secured the vital three points for the host although it was Lionel Messi who has since captured the headlines for how he handled his substitution.
