With two spots in the semi-finals already decided after Inter and Manchester United won their respective clashes against Bayer Leverkusen and Copenhagen, Shakhtar and Basel will now battle for the third spot in another one-legged tie on Wednesday. Eastern European outfit Shakhtar have already won their domestic league after having a nearly perfect first stage - they suffered just one loss and drew only twice - which allowed them to cruise into the second stage, known as the Championship stage by 14 points over their nearest challenger.

The Miners, led by Luis Castro, also strolled through phase two without much fuss. Of the ten games they played in the Championship stage, they lost just once, on matchday one, and ultimately won the league by a whopping 23 points. Although they were not as dominant in the Champions League, where they crashed out in the group stage after finishing in third spot in a tough quartet that included Manchester City, it was only by a narrow margin.

In fact, plucky side Atalanta only narrowly pipped them to second place by squeaking by on seven points following a 3-0 win over Shakhtar on matchday six; had that game gone the other way, it would have been the Bergamo-based side featuring in the Europa League and Shakhtar testing their mettle in the Champions League.

They've largely progressed through the Europa League without much trouble following a tough two-legged tie against Benfica and come into this tie having beaten Wolfsburg 5-1 on aggregate. Shakhtar will be seeking to win the Europa League for the first time since 2009, but will first need to find a way past Swiss side Basel. The RotBlau, who finished in third spot have never won any European competition in their history; to date, their best finish in the Europa League was reaching the final four in the 2012/2013 season.

While Basel have done quite well so far in this competition, they have struggled in their travels, winning just two of their last six on the road. And to complicate matters, they will be missing several key players due to injury and suspension ahead of this crunch clash. Furthermore, their head to head record against Shakhtar unfortunately isn't the best - they've lost their last five meetings with their upcoming opponents across all competitions, and Shakhtar is only missing one player as a result of suspension.
