RB Lepizig, Timo Werner break records in 5-0 Mainz 05 victory

Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig has surpassed its club record for the most goals scored in a single season. Die Roten Bullen scored thrice in the first 45 minutes of Sunday's away encounter with Mainz 05 and added two more in the second half.

The visitors were fired into the driving seat via an 11th-minute strike by Timo Werner. In the 23rd minute, Yussuf Poulsen doubled the advantage by converting a pass from Marcel Sabitzer after an earlier miss. The Danish attacker subsequently returned the favor for the latter to secure the commanding lead with a third in the 41st minute.

Three minutes into the second half, Timo Werner grabbed his brace by finishing off a well-worked move started by Kevin Kampl. In the 75th minute, the German striker secured a hat-trick with another remarkable finish to take his goal tally for the season to 24.

In effect, Werner contributed six goals and three assists in the 13 goals scored against Mainz this season. In the return leg, the 24-year-old striker scored and assisted three goals apiece as his side run away with an emphatic 8-0 victory at home.

With Sunday's three goals, the Liverpool transfer target surpassed his best return in a single Bundesliga season of 21 goals scored in the 2016-2017 season. He has also become the first player in the league's history to score a hat-trick at home and away against the same club in the same campaign since Ulf Kirsten. The latter did so for Bayer Leverkusen against Borussia Monchengladbach in the 1998-1999 season.

Currently, Werner's goal contribution stands at 42 in 38 matches so far this season. The German international has scored 30 goals and assisted 12 in all competitions.

On a grand scale, RB Leipzig also surpassed its all-time highest-scoring season with the day's haul. In the 27 Bundesliga games played so far this season, Julian Nagelsmann's side has scored 68 times. The highest they had managed to date was 66. This was scored in the entirety of the 2016-17 Bundesliga season.
