The official has overseen three previous Clasicos and has never avoided controversy.

El Clasico is quickly approaching. The footballing world is gearing up for Barcelona’s clash with Real Madrid, with La Liga announcing the referee for the December 18 showdown.

However, according to Marca, Los Blancos are not happy with the man chosen to officiate the Camp Nou clash. The league announced that none other than Alejandro Hernandez Hernadez will be the referee for this game.

He has overseen three previous Clasicos and has been involved in controversial decisions in every game he has officiated. The first saw him send off Ramos and rule out a Bale goal in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win at Camp Nou in 2015/16.

He returned to this fixture the following season and showed Ramos a red card once again, this time in the Messi-inspired late 3-2 victory at the Bernabeu. He was back at the helm of El Clasico in 2018 in the 2-2 draw but angered Los Blancos fans for failing to award a foul from Suarez on Varane in the build-up to the Blaugrana’s equalizer.

Furthermore, the man behind VAR has also upset the Madrid giants as he is none other than Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea. He was the man who sent off Cristiano for diving in the 2017 Spanish Super Cup, with Ronaldo pushing the official after being dismissed which led to a five-game ban.
