New El Clasico date confirmed but La Liga is seeking legal action against decision

It is official: the first El Clasico of the season will be held in December. After it was revealed the original October 26 fixture would be postponed, it was predicted that the game would be staged in the final month of 2019, but only now has it been confirmed.

The RFEF announced that the rescheduled game will be held on December 18, a date agreed upon by both the Blaugrana and Los Blancos, a near two-month postponement. The reason for this delay is no secret, as political unrest in the Catalan region is the sole reason behind this decision.

The decision by the Spanish high court the hand out jail time to separatist leaders has sparked protests in the region. Many feared that this fixture, considered by the masses to be the best rivalry in world football, would be used as a political statement. Insecurity was another worry that played a role in the change of plans.

Barcelona and Real Madrid had announced in an official statement that both sides are in favor of a December 18 match-up. The Spanish Football Federation concurred and have now announced the date.

However, this decision hasn't gone down well with La Liga, who have been embroiled in several disputes with the RFEF. The new date would see El Clasico played on a Wednesday and not on a weekend as initially planned.

They are thus not happy with the decision and have announced that they will be looking into taking legal action. La Liga announced in a statement (as per RTE):

"La Liga doesn't agree with the Competition Committee's decision to stipulate 18 December - after an agreement was reached between Barcelona and Real Madrid, despite La Liga's objections - as the date in which the postponed Clasico should be played," La Liga said in a statement.

"We are studying the documentation that we have recently received regarding the process in which the decision was taken. This is in order to evaluate taking possible legal action and against whom it should be tabled, before the relevant and opportune public organizations or legal organisms."
