Manchester City: Guardiola to allow players to choose their own captain

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has revealed that he will give his players the freedom to choose their own captain ahead of the 2019/2020 season. The Citizens are currently without a skipper following the departure of Vincent Kompany at the end of last season.

In the Belgian's absence, Fernandinho, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, as well as Kevin De Bruyne are among the senior figures left in the Etihad dressing with all being potential candidates fill the vacant captaincy slot. In Wednesday's preseason friendly against West Ham, Silva was conferred the honor to wear the armband while the permanent appointment is yet to be made.

Contrary to popular culture in most clubs where the manager appoints the new skipper, Pep Guardiola has stated that his players will be responsible for the election of Vincent Kompany's successor. However, the decision will not be made until all his squad members are back from their respective summer breaks.

"They will choose the captain when we are all together," Guardiola said, according to BBC.

"After they are all back (they are) going to make a meeting and decide who is going to be captain."

Meanwhile, City's playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is keen on landing the role should the opportunity present itself.

"If the team wants me to be captain, or the club does, I would gladly accept it but I think that's something everybody needs to talk about as a team, as a club.

"This will be talked about when everyone comes back."
