Deschamps has been rocked with a huge injury blow ahead of Wednesday's showdown with the defending champions.

France are gearing up for a crucial Euro 2020 showdown with Portugal in the final round of the group stage, with this tie set to decide where Les Blues will finish in their group. However, with such an important game on the horizon, the 2018 World Cup winners have been rocked with an unfortunate injury.

One crucial figure in Didier Deschamps' camp has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament and that man is none other than Ousmane Dembele. The 24-year-old picked up a knee issue in the recent clash with Hungary and looks to be out for at least three weeks, with RMC reporting that he has thus been sent home to recover.

A three-week layoff means that he would return a few days after the Euro 2020 final, scheduled to take place on June 11. As a result, he would not be able to participate in the curtain closer at the Wembley Stadium should France go all the way.

RMC Sport editor-in-chief Bouhafsi confirms Dembele's injury blow

While Dembele is not a starter for France, the Barcelona star, alongside Olivier Giroud, is one of a few players who can come off the bench and make an immediate impact if necessary. The former Dortmund sensation was substituted on just before the hour mark in the clash with Hungary, quickly becoming a menace for the opposition defense, but was sadly taken off 30 minutes later.

"It's a hit to the tendon, behind the knee, it will be necessary to check," Deschamps revealed after the game, which ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw.

"He played on, he attempted a cross and felt some fairly significant discomfort. I brought him off. We will have to watch it."

This is yet another blow in what has been an injury-ravaged career for the Frenchman so far. He failed to make a single appearance for his national team in 2019 and 2020, but after getting an adequate number of games under his belt at Barcelona in 2020/21, he worked his way back into Deschamps' plan and made the cut for Euro 2020.

Other sources claim the 24-year-old could be out for two months, meaning he will miss the Blaugrana's pre-season. His absence from the tournament, however, is all that matters to France as they look to get their hands on the European Championship crown for the first time since 2000.

Les Bleus, who are on four points, will take on defending champions Portugal on Wednesday in their third and final group stage fixture. This tie is crucial as it will decide where they will finish in Group F and, subsequently, determine who they will face in the round of 16. Victory will secure Mbappe and Co. the top spot, but anything other than that could result in a runners-up finish and a potential showdown with England in the next round.
