Fans will be in for a treat as reigning PL champs Liverpool welcome current league leaders Manchester United on January 17th.

Preview: Liverpool vs Manchester United

Reigning champions Liverpool will face a very stern test as they prepare to welcome high-flying Manchester United to Anfield. The Reds come into this game winless in their last three matches following draws with West Brom and Newcastle, followed by a loss to Southampton. As such, Jurgen Klopp will be determined to avoid a fourth game sans defeat, and more significant, to prevent his side from losing back-to-back matches for the first time under his tenure.

Although they rebounded somewhat with a 4-1 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup, Liverpool have hit a rough patch that has seen them struggle for goals as they failed to score against Newcastle and Southampton. If they fail to score here, it will mark the first time since March 2005 that they have gone three matches sans a goal.

Manchester United, by contrast, have experienced a remarkable turnaround in things over the past two months. The Red Devils have won nine of their last 11 league fixtures since a 1-0 home loss to Arsenal on November 1, and will be also looking to extend their impressive unbeaten streak away from home. In fact,  Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men have not lost a road match in the Premier League since they were, ironically perhaps, beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at this same ground nearly exactly a year ago (on January 19th). Since then, the current league leaders have gone 15 games unbeaten, with 12 wins from that run. Notably, 11 of those victories have been from their most recent 12 away ties, which definitely bodes well for their trip ahead to Anfield.

Just as Klopp will be determined to avoid losing back to back games, his tactical counterpart Solskjaer will be seeking what would be his first win against Liverpool, with two draws and a defeat to date. And if he can accomplish that, the visitors will move six points clear of the reigning champs - which could be what may end up shaping the title race this season.
