And the deciding factor was not the falling out with the Reds supporters upon his Anfield exit.

Philippe Coutinho was one of the best attackers in the Premier League when he left Liverpool for Barcelona. Reds fans were livid at seeing their star player walk out the club in the middle of the season, and while things turned out well for the club, many wonder if the animosity towards him lingers.

This was not Jurgen Klopp's thought process, however, when the opportunity to resign him emerged. The Brazilian was tipped to make an impact at Camp Nou but instead disappointed Blaugrana fans and endured an underwhelming 2018/19 campaign.

He was jeered by Camp Nou goers and with Griezmann now in Catalonia, and Neymar possibly following, it was clear that the former Inter Milan magician had to leave. He was heavily linked with a return to the Premier League, namely Man United and Tottenham, but there were suggestions of a second spell at Anfield.

However, his falling out with the Liverpool crowd was not the deciding factor for Klopp. According to the German boss, his reason for passing on the opportunity of bringing the Brazilian back to Merseyside was strictly financial.

The sale of Coutinho bagged the Merseyside giants a whopping $177M but a lot was reinvested into the club, as the Premier League giants went on to spend big on the likes of Van Dijk and Alisson. Both were money well spent, as the center-back and goalkeeper were key to Liverpool's 2018/19 Champions League success but Klopp admits that left them short on cash.

"It sounds a bit strange, but we could not afford it, we have already spent the cash that we got for him," the manager told Goal.

"We were reluctant to hand him over, but Barcelona forced us with money, so to speak.

"The move [to Bayern] makes sense for both sides. He's a super player and a great boy. He is a world-class footballer who can change games in the right environment."

Coutinho is now at Bayern Munich, where he will spend the entire 2019/20 campaign on loan. Liverpool, meanwhile, continue their push for a first Premier League title. They came achingly close last season but have shown their intent from day one. Next up for them is a tricky home clash with Arsenal.
