The former defender has taken a contrasting stance on his previous judgement of the Frenchman.

Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has admitted making a mistake in saying that Paul Pogba was "not as good as he thinks he is" during his fallout period with Jose Mourinho. The ex-Reds defender, who is now a pundit for Sky Sport, categorically stated that the Red Devils were not going to see a change in the Frenchman's form should Mourinho be sacked.

"If Mourinho goes you won't see a new Pogba,' Carragher declared on Sky Sports back in September last year.

"He's not as a good as he thinks he is. His big problem is his understanding of the game. You can sum up his performances in his last two games – a great goal vs Young Boys but he was at fault for Wolves' goal.

"He would have the big clubs going in for him but Barcelona would be the biggest ill fit for him. Pogba plays for himself. He's not really a captain. He's let his agent speak ill of the club. He's not the man.

"I don't think he's disciplined to play in Mourinho's midfield."

Contrary to what the 41-year-old former England international said, Pogba has experienced a massive renaissance with the arrival of interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Against Chelsea in the FA Cup Fifth Round tie, the 25-year-old midfield star's upsurge in form was once again on display with him scoring and assisting in Tuesday night's encounter.

In the 12 matches played under Solskjaer, the former Juventus star has been involved in 15 goals, scoring nine goals and assisting six. That is six more than he managed in 20 games under Jose Mourinho this season (five goals, four assists).

Following the end of the clash with Chelsea on Monday, Carragher was reminded of the statement he made about Paul Pogba earlier in the season by fans on Twitter. The ex-Liverpool defender quickly replied: "Well I hope you completely disagreed at the time & not just now?!!

"He's been a revelation since OGS came in because he's basically let him play without defending. I didn't see this turnaround so I have no problem saying I was wrong.

"But I won't change my stance that Pogba should have delivered a lot more for Man Utd/Jose in those first two years no matter what the system or set up."

Carragher's former club Liverpool will travel to Old Trafford on Sunday to take on Manchester United in a Premier League fixture that could have a massive bearing on the table at the end of the season.
