For the third time this month, Chelsea and Tottenham are gearing up to do battle, with the two London giants set to face off in the Premier League this time around. Their Super Sunday showdown, which will be held at Stamford Bridge at 11:30 am. ET, could play a huge role in this season's highly-contested top-four race.
The Blues have already faced the north London outfit twice since the turn off the year, with both encounters coming in the Carabao Cup semifinals. Tuchel's side were drawn against Conte's men, with the European champions triumphing both home and away.
If the 2-0 victory in the first leg did not kill off the game, then it was Antonio Rudiger's goal in the return leg that put the final nail in the coffin. Nonetheless, Spurs put in a valiant display at home and saw two penalties overruled by VAR, with a goal also being chalked off from Harry Kane for offside.
After the game, Conte pointed to the gulf in quality between the two squads, and while the Italian was spot on, Chelsea are the ones who enter this tie short on confidence. Lukaku and Co. drew 1-1 away to Brighton in their most recent Premier League fixture, thus stretching their winless run in the English top-flight to an unsavory four games.
In fact, the Blues have won only once in their last eight Premier League matches, suffering two defeats and four draws along the way. As a result, not only are Chelsea's title hopes over, with Man City sitting 12 points ahead, but the London giants could find themselves in a top-four scrap if their closest rivals win their games in hand.
One of those teams are Tottenham. The away side are only eight points behind their London rivals despite playing four fewer games. Win all those fixtures and Antonio Conte's men will move ahead of the UEFA Champions League holders.
Harry Kane and Co. showed they have the fight and spirit to pull this off after their stellar comeback win over Leicester over the midweek. Spurs visited the King Power Stadium on Wednesday in one of this season's several postponed fixtures. The north London outfit went a goal down on two occasions only two score twice in the dying minutes of added time to triumph 3-2.
That result kept Conte's unbeaten start in the Premier League at Tottenham alive, but things will get difficult for Italian from here on. Their next three games in the league after Sunday's trip to the Bridge are showdowns with Southampton, Wolves, and league leaders Man City, hence the importance of winning this weekend's clash.
Chelsea: The home side have been bolstered by the return of Reece James, but this game unfortunately comes too soon for the talented right-back. Andreas Christensen is out due to COVID-19 while Edouard Mendy (at AFCON 2021) and Ben Chilwell (out for the season) remain unavailable. Kovacic and Werner, who came off the bench to little avail in the 1-1 draw with Brighton, could return to the lineup.
Tottenham: Son and Romero remain on the sidelines but the visitors will welcome back Eric Dier for this showdown. Whether Bergwijn, who came off the bench to net his breathtaking two goal haul in the Leicester win, will return to the lineup remains unclear. However, one player certain to start – bar injuries or COVID-19 – is Skipp, with the young midfielder impressing this season.
Chelsea have emerged triumphant in five of their last six Premier League encounters with Spurs.
In fact, Tottenham have failed to score in five of those six showdowns.
The north London giants have won just once in their last 31 league visits to Stamford Bridge (D10, L20).
