Already into the round of 16, Bayern will look to wrap up their group stage campaign with six wins out of six as they host Barcelona.

Preview: Bayern vs Barcelona

On Wednesday evening, two very familiar foes - Bayern Munich and Barcelona - will renew acquaintances as the 2021/22 Champions League group stages comes to a conclusion. And once again, it's all advantage Bayern with the Bavarian titans humiliating the fallen Spanish giants 3-0 in the reverse fixture earlier this season. Die Roten come into this match having scored 19 times - an average of more than three goals per match - and conceding just three.

Their last home game in this competition saw them easily sweep aside Benfica, scoring five on the night after thrashing the Portuguese side 4-0 less than a fortnight prior. While Julian Naglesmann's men had to really battle in a very frosty (literally and metaphorically) Ukraine to dispatch Dynamo Kiev, their superiority and overall class expectedly came through for them to earn a 2-1 win and preserve their perfect winning streak in this tournament.

Indeed, Bayern are on the cusp of making it six wins from six. Interestingly, the last time they achieved this was during the 2019/20 edition of the Champions League, during which they scored 24 and conceded five times. More significant, it just so happened to be the season in which they not only won another Treble, but became the second team to win that highly-sought after collection of trophies (after, ironically perhaps, Barcelona).

The hosts will come into this game in dangerous form as they're now four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table following their 3-2 win over Dortmund. Last Saturday's Klassiker certainly did not disappoint - unless if one is a Dortmund fan - and it will be interesting to see if that outcome has basically shut down the title race for another season.

Meanwhile, as Bayern continue to go from strength to strength, Barcelona continue to struggle to find their footing. The Blaugrana have looked a totally different side since the surprise departure of their star man Lionel Messi to PSG and come into this match sitting in a very disappointing seventh spot in the La Liga table. 12 points behind league leaders Real Madrid, the Catalan side were beaten 1-0 by Real Betis at the weekend, which comes as a huge setback following the progress they'd appeared to have started under new manager Xavi.

Arguably, this will be the toughest challenge for the former midfield maestro. The 2010 World Cup winner, who took over in November, has won two, drawn one, and lost the other of his first four games in charge of his former side. As things stand, Barcelona presently sit in second spot, and are looking good to qualify for the round of 16 as runners-up, but will be very well aware of Benfica lurking. It's set to be a scrappy battle for second place, as the Portuguese side will face bottom-feeders Dynamo Kiev and look like the big favorites there.

In short, it's win or nothing for Barcelona, for if they draw Bayern and Benfica, as expected, beat Dynamo, they'll be featuring in the Europa League due to their inferior head to head record against the Eagles. Although Bayern have already qualified, Barcelona obviously won't be expecting the Bavarians to show them any mercy or do them any favors as they're looking to wrap up their own group stage campaign on a fine note. Plus, star man Robert Lewandowski will be looking to become only the second player to score in all six Champions League group stage matches - after none other than Cristiano Ronaldo, who achieved that feat during the 2017/18 edition.
