Wolfsburg will look to successfully defend their DFB-Pokal Frauen title as they take on Essen in the 2020 final on July 4th.

Preview: Wolfsburg vs Essen

Fresh off winning another Frauen-Bundesliga title, Wolfsburg will now seek to also successfully retain their DFB-Pokal Frauen title as they prepare to take on SGS Essen in the final. Die Wölfinnen had an oustanding 2019/2020 campaign in the league, finishing top of the table ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich by eight points, and more siginficant, without suffering a single loss. This is something that no other team - whether the men's or women's squads - have achieved in Germany to date.

Stephan Lerch's side netted 93 goals over just 22 matches which by far made their attack the strongest in the league, while they conceded a measly eight times during that same time frame, proving that they had no issues keeping things well-controlled in defense, either. Not surprisingly, heavyweights Wolfsburg have already beaten Essen twice this season, thrashing them 5-1 at home last year before crusing to a comfortable 3-0 win at their opponents' home ground just a few weeks ago.

Wolfsburg has pretty much strolled through the DFB-Pokal Frauen from the second round to the final without fuss. After easing past lower-tier side SV Berghofen, they had no issues overpowering fellow Frauen-Bundesliga side Bayern Munich before scoring eight goals sans reply against Gütersloh and Arminia Bielefeld in the quarter-finals and the semi-finals (3-0 and 5-0).

Yet, despite facing a rough spell near the end of this season, including losing three league games on the bounce including the 3-0 loss to Wolfsburg, Essen, who ultimately concluded the regular season in fifth place, nonetheless have managed to secure their spot in the finals of the upcoming DFB-Pokal Frauen. To date, they've never won this cup, with their best result being a runners-up spot in 2014 when they lost 3-0 to Frankfurt.

Essen have clearly put quite a lot of effort into this competition, as they are only making their second final appearance in the club's history. Their journey started in the second round, where they beat minnows SV Meppen 5-1, followed by round of 16, quarter-finals, and semi-finals victories over Köln, Turbine Potsdam, and Bayer Leverkusen all by scores of 3-1.

This game will be quite significant for Lena Oberdorf, Marina Hegering, Lea Schüller and Turid Knaak as the quartet will be playing their final match for Essen. Interestingly, Oberdorf's next destination just so happens to be the club she will be facing in this upcoming final: Wolfsburg. To date, Essen have beaten Wolfsburg just seven times in their club's history - so it will be very interesting to see if any of Essen's outgoing players will be able to have a big impact as the minnows seek to pull off what would be a huge upset in women's football on Saturday.
