Liverpool are gearing up for their highly-anticipated clash with Man City in the Premier League. Unfortunately, the newly-crowned champions will be without one key player for their trip to the Etihad Stadium.
That man is Joel Matip, Van Dijk’s trustworthy comrade and partner in crime in defense. The Cameroonian has been a crucial figure in the Reds’ back-four this term, one often overlooked due to the presence of last year’s Dutch Ballon d’Or candidate. Unfortunately though, he will play no part in Thursday’s clash with the Citizens.
The 28-year-old center-back picked up a foot injury during the recent Merseyside Derby, which ended in a drab goalless draw. This incident occurred roughly 73 minutes into the game, with the former Schalke man eventually being replaced by Dejan Lovren.
“This season I will be not back on the pitch but for next season, I hope I’m going to be quite early a direct help for the team,” Matip said as per a statement on the club’s official website.
This means he will play no part in the upcoming Man City clash and the games between now and the end of 2019/20. It should be noted that Liverpool have already been crowned the Premier League champions and have nothing left to play for this season, having crashed out of both the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup.
On top of that, Joe Gomez is back in the picture and should easily deputize. The Englishman featured in their previous encounter earlier in 2019/20, coming on as a late substitution for Mohamed Salah to see out a 3-1 win. Klopp’s side will be confident of winning despite Matip’s absence, with Man City’s recent 2-1 loss to Chelsea showing once against that they are not the Guardiola side of last season.
