What is the form of Japan compared to England?

With only one win in their last six games in all competitions, Japan must win to secure progression. They have won once and drawn once in the FIFA Women's World Cup but have only two wins from eight games to show since the 2019 SheBelieves Cup began back in late February.

As for England, they have lost only twice in their last nine games and both those defeats were friendlies. So far at France 2019, the Three Lionesses boast a perfect running, scoring three goals and conceding only once in their opening two games and have already booked their ticket to the next round.

Japan vs England head-to-head record

This will be the third straight FIFA Women's World Cup tournament in which these two nations have faced off. The record stands at one win each but it was Japan's victory that hurt the most. England triumphed over the Asian giant's 2-0 during the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup but suffered heartbreak against them four years later in Canada, losing 2-1 in the semis.

A 2013 friendly ended in a 1-1 draw while their most recent encounter was in the 2019 SheBelieves Cup, with the Three Lionesses smashing their opponent 3-0.

Preview

This game is do-or-die for Japan. After reaching back-to-back Women's World Cup finals, winning the 2011 edition, the Asian giants could suffer the embarrassment that is a group-stage exit.

Nadeshiko sits in the second spot with four points and are the favorites to follow England into the knockout stage. This, however, does not mean their ticket is guaranteed as a loss against Phil Neville's side accompanied by a victory for Argentina over Scotland in their final group-stage game could see Japan drop to third.

Asako Takakura's side will do everything to avoid that. England has already secured progression and might air on the side of safety, resting their key players for the knockout stage. On the flip side, a loss to the Japanese would see them miss out on the top spot in Group D and could thus go all out. All that is certain is that this will be an exciting showdown.
