Reigning UCL champions Bayern will begin their title defense with a home clash against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, October 21.

Preview: Bayern vs Atletico

After finally ending a seven-year wait, Bayern Munich clinched their sixth Champions League title last season to make it two Trebles for the storied club. They will now be looking to make it back to back wins in this competition for the first time since winning a trio of titles from 1974 to 1976, and Hansi Flick's men open their title defense with a home match against Atletico Madrid.

With Red Bull Salzburg and Eastern European outfit Lokomotiv Moscow completing this quartet, it's pretty clear who are the top two favorites to head into the round of 16 as group winners. As such, this first meeting between Bayern and Atletico is even more critical, and die Roten will want to make sure that seven really is a lucky number and pick up a win in what will be their seventh meeting with Los Rojiblancos.

Robert Lewandowski, who finished last season as the top scorer in this tournament, will naturally be looking to get up and running as well. However, Atleti are famed for their strong defense, and have now bolstered their attack with the signing of experienced striker Luis Suarez.

Bayern will have even more motivation to beat Diego Simeone's side, as the last time they met in 2016, die Roten were dumped out at the semi-finals stage after Los Rojiblancos were able to progress on away goals.

Both teams have made a solid start to the season. Bayern have won three of their first four Bundesliga games and have since recovered following a shock 4-1 defeat to Hoffenheim on matchday two. Atletico are unbeaten in their first five La Liga games, albeit three of them have been draws - in which they were unable to score in two of those stalemates.

That being said, new signing Suarez has gotten off to a strong start, with three goals and an assist in four games for Diego Simeone's side, and will certainly look to add to that tally on his Champions League debut for his new club. Moreover, given that he was part of the Barcelona team who were humiliated 8-2 by Bayern last season, Suarez will have his own motivations for wanting to lead his team to all three points in this tough clash.

Team news: Bayern vs Atletico

Bayern: The hosts have been dealt a huge blow with Serge Gnabry testing positive for COVID-19. In addition, they still have to make do without new signings Tanguy Nianzou due to a hamstring injury. Fellow new acquisition Leroy Sane has started to recover from a knee problem that has kept him out of the last couple of games, but if he does get involved in this game, it will be from the bench. Finally, young American international Chris Richards is also a major doubt due to a calf injury - meaning that he may have to wait longer to make an appearance this season for Bayern in the UCL.

Atletico: The visitors also have some big absentees for this match, with experienced striker Diego Costa out with a thigh injury, along with defender Sime Vrsalko, who isn't yet recovered from a knee injury. Key midfielder Saul is a major doubt due to a knock, and isn't likely to start in this upcoming game.
