Man City vs Real Madrid – Preview

The UEFA Champions League will be making its much-awaited return this Friday with two games, one being the highly-anticipated showdown between Manchester City and Real Madrid. In fact, this tie – it could be argued – is the most exciting match-up of the round of 16 and it will come to a conclusion this midweek.

The Citizens boast a 2-1 lead from the first leg, enjoying a remarkable win at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, that triumph came before football was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a lot has changed since then, the most important being Los Blancos’ form.

Zidane’s men had failed to win four of the five games leading up to the break, including their home clash with the Citizens. However, since football returned, the Spanish giants have played 11 matches in total and have suffered zero defeats, winning all but one of those ties (D1). Ramos and Co. resumed the Primera Division campaign trailing Barcelona in the standings but quickly leapfrogged their bitter rivals due to their impeccable form, thus beating Messi’s side to the title. Some have pointed to controversial refereeing decisions that went in Real Madrid’s favor in recent games but no one can deny the turnaround Zidane’s has pulled off. The questioned is can they now achieve a comeback or is that out of the question?

As for Guardiola’s side, a lot too has changed for them since the break. The English giants have now confirmed their spot in next season’s Champions League after winning their CAS appeal against UEFA’s two-year European ban. Many predicted that suspension would be the spark Pep’s men needed to end their wait for European success but with the ban now taken away, it will be interesting to see if that desire fades away.

The Citizens had long been out of the English top-flight race due to several slip-ups during the campaign, so it was not a huge blow when Liverpool officially got their hands on the title in late June. Man City did miss out on the FA Cup title, however, crashing out in the semis at the hands of Arsenal and former assistant coach Mikel Arteta. Additionally, due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, football is being played behind closed doors, which means City’s home advantage could amount to nothing as they will have no fans to pack the stands. All we know is that this promises to be a thriller!

Team news – Man City vs Real Madrid

Man City: The home side have only two absentees heading into the game. The first is Sergio Aguero who remains on the sideline due to a knee injury. The other is Mendy who is suspended for the second leg. Leroy Sane has been removed from the squad due to his move to Bayern Munich but the club’s key players – De Bruyne, Sterling, Maahrez, and Jesus – should all be at hand.

Real Madrid: Unfortunately, Zidane must make do without club captain and icon Sergio Ramos who is suspended for this tie. Mariano Diaz is unavailable while Marcelo is a doubt due to an adductor issue. Modric and Valverde are available but will be cautious if they play as they are a yellow card away from a suspension.
