ABC

ABC is an English-language TV network in USA, which broadcasts in high definition (720p). It is owned by Walt Disney Television, a subsidiary of mass media and entertainment conglomerate, The Walt Disney Company. Its content includes popular TV series and sporting events. Over the years, ABC has covered the NFL, NBA and college football games, Formula One, tennis and more. It has also aired important soccer events, such as the MLS Cup, and numerous FIFA tournaments. It is particularly renowned among soccer fans for its decades of FIFA World Cup coverage on US TV.

In 2005, the network was part of the biggest TV deal struck for a single country at the time, when FIFA awarded the broadcast rights to Spanish-language network Univision and ABC/ESPN. It was reported that the U.S. broadcasters joined force to present a cash payment of USD 425 million to soccer’s governing body, which eventually granted them access to all FIFA events from 2007 to 2014.

The agreement included the 2010 and 2014 FIFA Men’s World Cup, in addition to the 2007 and 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and 11 other FIFA events, for which ABC and ESPN held exclusive English-language rights. As a result, ABC combined with ESPN and ESPN2 to telecast all 64 matches from the South Africa 2010 World Cup live in high definition. The line-up of exclusive matches on ABC included the U.S. national team’s opener against England, two Round of 16 fixtures, two quarterfinal encounters, the Third Place match and the final.

In 2014, ABC carried out similar coverage of the Brazil World Cup. It covered six matches from the group stage, two from the Round of 16, one from the quarterfinals, and the main final – a game for which it averaged 17,324,000 viewers and a 9.1 US HH rating, according to Nielsen.

Earlier on in 2002, ABC aired six matches as tape-delayed broadcasts from the Korea/Japan World Cup. During the 1998 World Cup in France, ABC was awarded 14 games, whereas in the previous edition held in USA, it televised 11 matches.

ABC is available in USA on DirecTV Channel 396, and on DISH Channel 7, both in SD and HD. Its programming is additionally available to stream live online through partner OTT platforms such as YouTube TV and Hulu. It also runs its own streaming service accessible via its official website. Live TV and catch-up services are provided as well via the official ABC streaming app for Android, iOS, Fire TV, Roku and Samsung Smart TVs.

The apps, which allow for the replay of full episodes, may require users to authenticate themselves via participating TV providers. These include AT&T U-verse, Cox, Verizon Fios and many others. Geo-restrictions may apply to the streams.
