About Super League
Super League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Swiss Super League, or Raiffeisen Super League for sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier football league in Switzerland. This league has changed its name and format on several occasions, but its current name has been established since 2013. The competition is played by only ten teams, with five of them having the chance to play in European competitions the following year.
The competition’s format is pretty straight-forward, with each team facing their rivals four times. The team with the most points by the end of the season wins the title, while the team that earns the least amount of points is relegated. The second-placed team will enter the preliminary stages of the UEFA Champions League, while the third, fourth and fifth places will play in the UEFA Europa League, although the third place will make it to the group stage without playing the preliminary rounds of the competition.
Due to the harsh weather conditions in this country during the winter, the league is paused for over six weeks. The last game before the winter break is played in mid-December, while the first clash after the winter break is played during the last week of January or the first week in February.
The 2018-19 Swiss Super League saw Young Boys claiming back-to-back titles. The yellow and black side earned that title with a 20-point advantage over Basel, their nearest rivals. This was the 13th title for this club. These teams made it to the UEFA Champions League, while Lugano, Thun, and Luzern qualified to the UEFA Europa League. Grasshopper was relegated to the Swiss Challenge League, while Xamax had to play the reintroduced relegation playoffs to keep their spot in the Swiss top-flight. They would prevail after winning a penalty shootout against Aarau.
The 2019-20 season will begin on July 19, 2019. The winter break will take place from December 16 to January 25, 2020, and the last game of the season is scheduled to be played on May 21, 2020. 17-time champions Servette were promoted to the Swiss Super League after a five-year hiatus, which saw them drop to the third tier in the Swiss football system.
Did you know? The recently relegated Grasshopper side is the most winning team in Swiss top-flight history, with 27 league titles to their name. The team claimed their last title in 2003, but they’ve been on a downward spiral since then, which saw them leave the Swiss Super League for the first time in 68 years.
