About Copa por Mexico

Copa por Mexico History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Copa por México is a friendly tournament created by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF). It was initially launched as a warmup competition prior to the restart of association football in Mexico following the pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was eventually picked up by Liga MX teams to get in gear before league matches were played after long pauses to the tournament, such as the one caused by the pandemic or by the World Cup in 2022.

The competition is played by a limited number of Liga MX teams. The first edition of the tournament was played by eight teams divided in two groups, while the second was held with ten clubs drawn in two groups. The winners and runners-up of each group go on to the next stage, where penalties would be used to determine the winner.

Curiously, both editions of the Copa por México have featured the same teams in the title match: Cruz Azul and Guadalajara. Both tournaments have been won by Cruz Azul.

TV rights for this competition in the United States were handed to TUDN USA. In Mexico, the competition was available to watch on TUDN México and via Sky Sports, with its mobile platform Blue to Go Video Everywhere handling coverage for mobile users.
