About Liga MX
Liga MX History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Mexican Primera Division, or Liga MX, is Mexico's top-tier football league. It was founded in 1943 and is operated by the Mexican Football Federation, commonly referred to as Femexfut.
The Mexican top-flight sees 18 teams battle against each other during a regular season consisting of 17 matches per club. Once that round is over, the top teams in the league enter a playoff stage, where all ties will be played on a home and away format all the way until the final, where the top seeded team will host the final game that will hand out the crown. Unlike many European countries, Liga MX has two tournaments during a normal season. The first one is named Apertura and is frequently played between July and December, and the other one is called Clausura, which runs from January to May. The winners of each tournament will have a bonus for claiming the title, as both will be included in the CONCACAF Champions Cup and in the Campeón de Campeones tournament, which determines the best team from Mexico in a season.
This competition also hosts two of the most popular teams in North America: América and Guadalajara. Las Águilas are the most winning team in the Mexican top-flight with 13 titles, followed closely by Guadalajara with 12. América has based its success in the hiring of prominent footballers from around the world, while Guadalajara has established its reputation by entering each tournament with players from Mexican descent. These teams play the “Clásico de Clásicos” at least once every six months, in what is one of the most anticipated matches of each season, earning high rating numbers in both Mexico and in the United States, where the game is highly popular due to the growing migration to the U.S.
Unlike most leagues from all over the world, Liga MX does not work under a promotion-relegation system. Previously, the league worked with that format alongside the Ascenso MX, but to assure the economical viability of its teams, the league decided to suspend relegation. Instead, the team that finishes in 18th place of the relegation rankings will be forced to pay a fine.
In Mexico, Liga MX clubs retain the rights to establish individual broadcast agreements, resulting in the league being showcased across multiple broadcasters. Networks broadcasting live Liga MX matches encompass ESPN, Claro Sports, Fox Sports, Televisa, and TV Azteca. The competition is also available for live streaming through platforms like VIX, Claro, Fox Sports Premium, and certain club-specific platforms. In the US, Liga MX can be accessed with Spanish commentary on broadcasters such as ESPN Deportes, Fox Deportes, Univision, and Telemundo. For limited English commentary, viewers can turn to the Fox Sports networks. Additionally, live streaming of Liga MX matches is available on VIX.
