The Liga Panameña de Fútbol, also known as LPF or Primera División de Panamá, is the top-tier football category in the Central American country. It was launched in 1988 and is run by the Federación Panameña de Fútbol.
Initially, the competition was held every year while crowning one champion, but the league adopted a two-tournament approach for the league in 2001, which ended with two teams being crowned as champions in each calendar year. The first tournament is called Apertura and takes place between January and May, while the follow-up tournament is called Clausura and is played between July and December.
The league is played by twelve teams each year under a promotion-relegation system. The team with the lowest number of points is relegated to the Segunda División, with its place being awarded to that competition’s champion. Speaking of the title race, the top three teams in each conference make it to the final round, with the best of each group earning a bye for the first stage. The first phase is played as a one-leg playoff, while the semifinals and the title match are played in two legs, where the top-seeded team gets home-field advantage for the return leg. The title match is played at a neutral venue in a single game format, where extra time and penalties will be used to crown the winner in the event of a draw.
Coverage for this league has been awarded to three companies: RPC, TV Max, and Tigo Sports. These companies have earned broadcasting rights to all games in this league until the end of 2026.
