About Liga 1

Liga 1 History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Indonesian Liga 1, or simply Liga 1, is the top-tier football category in the Asian country. The tournament was launched in 2008 known as Indonesian Super League, but in 2017 its name was changed to Liga 1. The tournament is organized by the PT Liga Indonesia Baru.

Over the years, the Liga 1 has worked under a promotion-relegation system, where three teams are usually relegated to Liga 2. The only exception to that came in the 2022-23 season, when the competition was cancelled after an incident in one of the matches, pausing relegation until further notice.

In terms of how the league sorts out who wins the title, the top four teams in the tournament enter a playoff stage, where two semifinals and the title match will be played on a home-and-away format, with the highest seeded team hosting the return leg of each tie.
The league has seen some of the best Asian players and some talented footballers from South America involved in this competition, with Persipura being the most winning team in Liga 1 history.

Coverage of this competition has been awarded to Indosiar, Nex Parabola, Vidio, and Vision+. Indosiar takes care of five games each week on free-to-air TV, while Nex Parabola covers games on pay-tv. Vidio and Vision+ share streaming rights for all games in the league, with all deals expiring until 2025.
