About Campeonato Carioca 1

Campeonato Carioca 1 History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Campeonato Estadual do Rio de Janeiro, more commonly known as Campeonato Carioca or Cariocao, is the top-tier football category for the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. The tournament is organized by the Football Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro, and it saw the light in 1906, and in 1941, the competition was acknowledged as professional by the Brazilian Football Confederation.

The tournament has been graced with the presence of some of the most popular teams from this country since its launch. Teams such as Botafogo, Fluminense, Flamengo, and Vasco da Gama have all been involved in this competition for more than 100 seasons, collecting over 105 titles between them. The format of the competition has changed throughout the years, with recent editions of the tournament watching 12 teams playing against each other for the Taça Guanabará title, which is handed to the team with the most points in the regular season.

The competition is then divided into two four-team playoffs; the top four go on and fight for the title, while the other four go on to battle for the Taça Rio, which grants a spot in the Copa do Brasil. Being at the top of Rio de Janeiro’s football system, the Campeonato Carioca works under a promotion-relegation system, watching the team with the least points after the regular season getting relegated to the Serie A2.

Once the relegation spot and the Taça Rio have been sorted out, those included in the Final Stage go on to play home and away fixtures in both the semis and the final. While the team with the best record during the regular season is given an advantage in the semifinals if there is a draw after both matches, the title match is decided with a penalty shootout.

Coverage of the Campeonato Carioca has been available in Brazil via linear TV channels such as Rede Bandeirantes and BandSports. Meanwhile, OTT platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, and Dale have been handed streaming rights for the tournament. Both the linear and OTT deals have been agreed until 2026.
