UNIVERSO History, Coverage, Features
Universo is a general entertainment pay-TV network in the United States. It is owned by NBCUniversal Hispanic Enterprises Group and Content, a division of NBCUniversal. Previously referred to as NBC Universo, the network focuses its content on U.S. Latinos through its Spanish-language programs.
As a sister channel of many stations overseen by NBC Sports Group, Universo broadcasts a significant amount of sporting events. Disciplines for which Universo has provided live coverage since it was launched in October 1993 include soccer, motorsport, and American football, in addition to many others from Olympic Games.
Universo’s soccer coverage in the past has included major international soccer tournaments, such as the FIFA World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup. It has also aired live matches of youth tournaments, including the FIFA U-20 World Cup and FIFA U-17 World Cup.
At club level, Universo’s history of soccer broadcast rights boasts big leagues under different confederations, such as the Mexican Liga MX and the English Premier League. With its content geared towards its Spanish-speaking audience, Universo has teamed up countless time with sister network Telemundo Deportes, for its Spanish-language coverage of soccer competitions.
Universo is available on DirecTV channel 410 (HD) and Dish Network channel 838 (HD) in USA, on satellite. It is also available via IPTV on AT&T U-verse SD channels 192 and 3009. On Verizon FiOS, Universo comes on SD channels 275 and 1643, and HD channel 775.
Multiple cable TV providers in USA offer Universo as part of their channel line-up, but the network’s channel number may vary based on the location. Optimum TV subscribers can watch Universo in HD on channels 197 and 1074, whereas for Spectrum customers in Manhattan, New York, Universo is available on channel 42. Spectrum subscribers in Long Beach, California, can however access Universo on channels 271 and 864.
Universo NOW also makes its programs—live soccer matches included—available on its streaming platform Universo NOW. The latter is available online for PC and Mac, and has a mobile app for both iOS and Android. Furthermore, viewers may choose to stream Universo online and on mobile via PlayStation Vue, DirecTV Now, YouTube TV and Sling TV.
