Atletico Madrid vs. Bayern Munich - A very curious case of Déjà vu

Atletico Madrid

Last season saw Atletico Madrid make it to their second Champions League final in just three seasons. Unfortunately for Diego Simeone's side, they were again pitted versus cross-town rivals Real Madrid. And for the second time, they were beaten to deny them the chance to finally get their hands on continental football's most coveted prize. Los Rojiblancos will come into this fixture still unbeaten across all competitions, but despite picking up a vital point in a draw with Barcelona, they labored quite a bit against Deportivo last weekend.

In fact, Simeone had planned to rest some key players, including Gabi and Kevin Gamiero, but had to bring both off the bench in order to guarantee them the win and to keep up pressure on Barcelona and Real Madrid in the race for the LaLiga title. The hosts will come into this fixture with a couple of players unavailable, including veteran Tiago, Moya, Gimenez and Augusto Fernandez (both of whom were injured in this past weekend's clash). Having really had to work to earn a win over PSV Eindhoven, Atleti will certainly face stiffer opposition when Bayern come to town. Still, they themselves are a tough foe, meaning that fans could be in for a tough tactical battle that could result in either a draw or a low-scoring affair.

Bayern Munich

Meanwhile, Bayern ended up on the wrong side of a 2-2 aggregate score-line last term against Atletico Madrid. It marked the third straight season die Roten were knocked out of the Champions League by Spanish opposition whilst Pep Guardiola was in charge. And curiously enough it was always at the semi-finals stage, with Real Madrid doing so in 2014 and Barcelona in 2015. Despite winning the Bundesliga title, Bayern's board are looking at bigger and better things.

And so, enter Carlo Ancelotti, who last won the Champions League with Real Madrid in 2014 and could become the first coach to win it with three different clubs should die Roten go the distance. The Bavarian titans boast a perfect record not just in the Bundesliga, but also across all competitions. In fact, only Ingolstadt has managed to score against them, and that was not enough to prevent Ancelotti's men from winning that game 3-1. There are some injury concerns, with Mats Hummels in doubt for this fixture and Douglas Costa definitely out, but the team were able to finally welcome both Jerome Boateng and Arjen Robben back into the fold last weekend.
