The chief executive of the Gunners handed the fans a huge blow in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal fans are anxious and on the edge of their seats in the current transfer window. Whilst the likes of Man United and Manchester City are look set to spend over £100m, the Gunners have only recruited one marquee signing over the summer.

Granit Xhaka, their £35m signing from Borussia Monchengladbach, arrived before UEFA Euro 2016. However, a shortage of activity has seen the north London giants recruit only Rob Holding and Takuma Asano afterwards.

Chief executive Ivan Gazidis has done little to help ease the supporters’ worries, recently admitting that the club just can’t financially compete with their high-spending rivals.

Speaking to the New York Times, he said: "We can't afford to outgun competitors that have far more money. We have to be very careful, very selective."

Granit Xhaka remains Arsenal's only marquee signing of the summer

Granit Xhaka, Arsenal, English Premier League

This will come as a huge blow to the fans hoping to see Arsenal end their 12-year wait for the Premier League crown.

However, Gazidis was adamant that the English top-flight is no longer solely controlled by money, adding:

"The constraints within the Premier League are less and less about pure finances. More relatively important become things like how well you identify players, how well you develop players, what kind of sports science you have, your analytics, your psychology.”

Arsenal have been linked with the likes of Riyad Mahrez of Leicester City and Alexandre Lacazette of Lyon, with a £29.3m bid for the latter player being turned down.

The fact remains that Arsenal are in need of signings, especially given the loss of captain Per Mertesacker to injury. The German will now reportedly miss five months of action.
