Wales will be making their first appearance in the UEFA Euro 2016. What are the expectations? Let's find out!

Wales will be making their first-ever appearance at the Euro 2016 in France, and are expected to leave their mark by the time the tournament ends. For such debutants, the expectations may be high but judging from the fact that they are undocumented in this tournament, they could cause a major surprise.

Wales’ UEFA Euro history

Wales qualified for Euro 2016 for the first time in their history after finishing second with 21 points behind European giants Belgium in Group B. They will now face Slovakia, Russia and England in the group stages of the tournament in France in Group B.

Recent form

They played a total of six international matches in 2015, won three, lost two, and drew one. In 2016, they have played two matches so far; a one-all draw against Northern Ireland and a 1-0 defeat to Ukraine. Both matches were international friendlies. They are set to face Sweden for an international friendly on June 5, 2016 before beginning their Euro 2016 campaign against Slovakia six days later. According to the latest FIFA world rankings as of May 2016, The Dragons sit at the 24th position.

Manager’s profile

Retired footballer Chris Coleman is the manager of the Wales national football team after taking over in January, 2012. The former Fulham and Real Sociedad boss suffered a 2-0 defeat in the hands of Mexico in his first game in charge, then lost to Belgium with the same score line in their 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Wales manager Chris Coleman

The 45-year-old became the first Welsh manager to lose his first five games but still hang on there to secure a 2-1 victory over Scotland in October 2012, thanks to Gareth Bale’s brace. His side then qualified for the Euro 2016 on October 10, 2015, their first qualification since 1958. Since taking charge of Wales, he has steered them to 11 wins, 7 draws and 13 defeats in 31 matches.

He may not have participated in this tournament as a player, but the recent qualification gives Coleman the chance to prove himself on a greater stage and make a strong statement by the time the tournament ends. And with the expected availability of big names such as the likes of Gareth Bale (Real Madrid) and Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal), Joe Allen (Liverpool) and Andy King (Leicester City), the Dragons are expected to breath fire in this year’s edition of the Euros. Bale (right) and Aaron Ramsey celebrate one of their goals for Wales
