Ecuador has not won a Copa America since their debut in 1939. In the 2011 edition they were knocked out in the group stage.

Ecuador is not known for performing well in the Copa America and this 2015 edition comes at a difficult time for the team managed by Gustavo Quinteros. The team is rapidly falling in the FIFA rankings from 26 in 2014 and it now appears in the 34th spot. It is the sixth best-ranked team in CONMEBOL.

Even before the ball starts rolling in Chile, they have already lost two key players. Felipe Caicedo from Espanyol personally called Quinteros to tell him that he wouldn't be ready for the tournament.  Days later, Antonio Valencia underwent surgery to get rid of some screws that he had from a surgery in 2010. Ecuador has lost the two friendly game they've played this year against Mexico and Argentina in March.

They are the third worst ranked team in Group A. Chile and Mexico are above them, while Bolivia is way behind, but once the ball rolls, everything that isn't expected to happen, may happen.

History in Copa America

Chile has played in this tournament since 1939 and has hosted it three times. In 2023, they will do so for a fourth time. They don't know what it is like to be the champions after almost 80 years competing. La Tri has also lost the game for third place twice. In 2011, they were knocked out in the group stage round with only one point after a scoreless draw with Paraguay in their opening game.

Players to Watch

Despite the absence of Caicedo, there are still dangerous players in Ecuador's squad. Their two main figures are Enner Valencia and Jefferson Montero. They both play in the Premier League with West Ham and Swansea respectively. Valencia arrived in England after being one of the best strikers in the Liga MX with Pachuca. In his debut season with West Ham, he just scored five goals in 36 games. Montero scored once with his new team.
