Manchester United's captain will be under medical surveillance this week to determine how much time he will have to stay away from the pitch.

Manchester United's doctors may be key to the team's possible top four finish, since they will have to take the task of making Wayne Rooney fit to play as soon as possible. During the Red Devils' disappointing loss against Everton, Rooney was subbed off, giving way to Robin Van Persie. The English international was seen with a pack of ice around his leg, and with evident signs of discomfort. Today, manager Louis Van Gaal spoke about Rooney's situation.

"Yes, Rooney was injured. He had a shot on his knee, so we have to wait and see how serious it is," the Dutch coach stated to the team's website.

This is not the first time during the course of this season that Rooney comes down with an injury. Back in November, Rooney was left out due to a minor injury against Hull City, but he ended up losing just a couple of games because of his physical problems.

His form this year playing for Manchester United has had its ups and downs, but he has been key to the team's performances, scoring 12 goals in 30 matches. The real problem for the team is that his possible replacement will have to be either Robin Van Persie, who recently recovered form an injury, or Radamel Falcao, who has been one of United's biggest disappointments this season.
