Returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines, the French attacker made the score sheet in Wednesday's DFB-Pokal clash, before falling victim to a scarf attack

Bayern Munich attacker Franck Ribery probably did not expect to get slapped in the face with a scarf when his side traveled to Hamburg to face off in the DFB-Pokal.

Pep Guardiola's men, last season's German Cup winners, strolled to an easy 3-1 win over die Rothosen as a 7th minute goal from summer signing Robert Lewandowski, and a 44th minute long-distance striker from defender David Alaba gave die Roten the advantage heading into the break.

The Bundesliga holders' 31-year-old French star, and last year's Ballon d'Or finalist later added a third in the 55th minute to all but seal progression into the last 16.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga grabbed a consolation goal for the home side five minutes from time before the chaos erupted during stoppage time.

One pitch invader, presumed to be a Hamburg fan, ran in the direction of Franck Ribery, who was being booed at every touch of the ball by the home supporters, smacking him with a scarf, then followed that up by giving him the finger, before being escorted off the field by security.

“Fortunately, nothing much happened,” Ribery, who declined to retaliate against his attacker, said after the game, smiling off the incident. 'It was a difficult situation, I didn't see him coming.”

Hamburg later apologised to the Bayern Munich star, and the club itself after Wednesday night's occurrence, via Twitter, saying: "Dear @FCBayern, dear Franck #Ribery. We apologise for what happened shortly before the end. That is not #HSV! #HSVFCB." 

Bayern accepted the apology, tweeting back: "Great gesture, @HSV. #Respekt."

Undefeated in Germany and in Europe, Bayern, who lead the Bundesliga table with 21 points from 9 games, will now shift focus to Saturday's all-important Allianz Arena encounter with fierce rivals and last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund.
