The Citizens boss saw his star midfield duo limp out of Wednesday night's Capital One Cup loss to Newcastle, as their Etihad Stadium clash with the Red Devils grows closer

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has admitted his side's recent form is a cause of worry as the reigning English Premier League champions prepare to host city rivals Manchester United in Sunday's highly-anticipated Manchester derby.

The Citizens coach made these comments after seeing his side fall to a shock 2-0 loss to Newcastle United as last season's Capital One Cup champions were dumped out of the competition in the fourth round, on Wednesday.

The loss to the Magpies in front of their home crowd stretches Manchester City's winless streak to three straight games, drawing with Russian side CSKA Moscow 2-2 in the Champions League last Tuesday, before succumbing to a 2-1 defeat away to West Ham, on Saturday.

“Of course, we must be worried,” Pellegrini insisted. “We didn’t win the three games we played this week. We must be worried about that, but we must find a solution, we must address it.

“My feeling is that we are not playing well. We are in a difficult moment. There is a lack of trust.

"We conceded two easy goals and we did not score from the chances we had. We are conceding goals too easily and not scoring, so when that happens, there is a lack of trust.”

To make things worse for the Chilean boss, Wednesday night's defeat saw the former Malaga manager lose two of his most influential midfielders to injuries, David Silva and Yaya Toure, picking up a knee and groin injury, respectively.

With the clash with Louis Van Gaal's crew fast approaching, Pellegrini claimed to be in the dark as to whether Silva or Toure would regain fitness in time for the Manchester derby.

“We will see tomorrow with the doctor and I can’t tell you at this moment,” the 61-year-old added. “David has a problem with his knee and I don’t know how serious it is.

“Yaya was a little bit tired in his groin, so I didn’t want to risk him any longer.”
