Borussia Dortmund has endured what can only be described a "nightmare start" to this season in the Bundesliga. They are continuing to make waves in the Champions League despite suffering defeats in the league. This time, it was FC Köln which put them to the sword. Dortmund gave up two goals in the match and could only reply once. Had any other man aside from Jürgen Klopp been sitting in the dugout, he would have surely been given a vote of confidence by now. In eight matches to date, they have lost five and won just twice. They have, in effect, gifted the title to Bayern. If Dortmund's fortunes do not change, they might be more concerned about finishing in a European spot rather than catching Bayern.
There was some positive news for Dortmund as Ilkay Gündogan returned to action during the weekend. Klopp's side have missed his presence badly. Dortmund was said to finally have enough depth to compete on all three fronts this season; however, with the league title seemingly already out of their grasp, they have to focus on the cup competitions. BVB sits atop their Champions League group, having beaten both Arsenal and Anderlecht. Their opponents, Galatasaray, sit at the bottom of the table.
Galatasaray picked up a point against Anderlecht but were then beaten thoroughly by Arsenal. They were also fined for the behavior of their fans in London recently by UEFA. In the clash against Arsenal, the Turkish fans threw flares onto the pitch. Wesley Sneijder had to go up to the fans and ask them to calm down. After the smoke caused by the flares cleared, play was resumed.
Galatasaray have done well in the Champions League in recent seasons but is performing poorly this season. However, Dortmund's stars are low on confidence following their problems in the league.
