On September 20, Leon faces Veracruz searching for a streak that allows them to defend their title. Veracruz looks to add points to avoid relegation next year.

Two desperate teams meet at Leon's Nou Camp Stadium looking to add points to their almost hopeless cause.

On one side, the current Mexican champions Leon will try to avoid elimination this early in the tournament. Their performance so far in the Apertura 2014 has been rather disappointing, earning just six points out of 24. To make matters worse, coach Gustavo Matosas resigned from his duties, but the team's owners refused to accept his resignation. Players such as Mauro Boselli will try to back their coach by earning three points against the "Red Sharks":

"We've had a very hard tournament, and we haven't been able to match the expectations surrounding us. If we want to access the playoffs, we have to earn 20 points out of 27, and as impossible as it sounds, we have accomplished great things before, so if we don't end up qualifying, at least we will go down fighting," Boselli said.

Veracruz has their own sort of problems, given they are more focused on the relegation standing than becoming title contenders. Los Tiburones get to this game with eight points, and with this game they hope to start a run that allows them some breathing room regarding the relegation standings, where they compete against Chivas and University of Guadalajara.

Coach Cristobal Ortega spoke about their opponent with the outmost respect, considering they are still the defending champions:

"We know Leon is behind us in the standings, but I believe they should be ranking higher. Sometimes you look at how they play, their roster, and sometimes you can't explain why they are having problems. We know they are a team to be respected, but we will face them with the task of making their losing streak longer," Ortega ended.

On their last meeting, Leon dominated at their home field, but it was Veracruz that ended up bagging the three points with a goal in the dying seconds of the match.
