Despite intelligent additions, Bayern's squad depth might count for little as they go up against City due to the squad's injury problems.

The UEFA Champions League has an old habit of pairing certain teams together. Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund for example have been paired with each other once again after being part of the same group in 2013 and 2011. Bayern and City are now familiar foes after being paired together in 2011 and 2013. The meetings were split between the two sides both times but what stands out is the fact that City won the match which had little significance on both occasions. In 2011, Bayern had already qualified and taken over top spot. In 2013, Bayern knew the odds of City overtaking them at the top were stacked against the team from Manchester.

However, Bayern comes into this match with a cloud of uncertainty looming over their heads. Post World Cup seasons are almost always tough on the Bavarians due to the large numbers they contribute to Germany's squad and other international squads. Bastian Schweinsteiger is yet to return to the pitch for example. Javi Martinez's horrendous injury in preseason has hurt the team even more. Xabi Alonso and Mehdi Benatia's signatures were needed; positions had to be filled, especially considering a hugely talented member of their midfield, Toni Kroos had left.

However, nobody realized that Holger Badstuber might be injured again. He hurt his thigh and will be missing for the rest of 2014. He had slotted in seamlessly into the team following his return after almost two years on the sidelines. Franck Ribery returned against Stuttgart, sporting a beard and scaring the opposition but has been ruled out of this one. Arjen Robben is rated doubtful.

Pep Guardiola now has to shuffle his side again. He has to decide whether to go with a back line of four or a back line of three. He has to decide whether he wants to throw Gianluca Gaudino into the mix or go with the comparitive experience of Sebastian Rode. Although Manchester City has not hit top gear yet, Bayern will have to watch their backs at the Allianz Arena.
