Rio Ave are the surprise leaders of the Primeira Liga as two weeks, and they will look to continue that on Monday against Boavista. Check out the global listings for Matchday 3 in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Matchday three in the Portuguese League offers the viewers their first glimpse of the Derbi Lisboeta this season. Same city rivals Benfica and Sporting CP will go head-to-head at the Estádio da Luz, looking to gain the upper hand on each other.

But before fans can look forward to that, they will have a few other fixtures they can check out.

Académica and Vitoria de Setúbal get things started on Friday night. The hosts have yet to win in the new campaign after two matches, and a visit from the Sadinos will not make things easy. In last year’s meeting between these two sides in Coimbra, they played to a one goal draw, while the return leg in Setúbal ended in a 1-0 victory for the hosts.

On Saturday, the action starts early with the two of the top teams in the Primeira Liga at the moment battling for supremacy.

Belenenses plays host to Vitoria de Guimarães, and both sides are perfect through two matches. After finishing very close to the relegation zone last season, Belenenses has got off to a fantastic start, winning both their matches by a 3-1 scoreline against Nacional and newcomers Penafiel. Guimarães will give them a tough test at the Restelo, with the Minhotos enjoying early season success as well.

Having scored six goals and only conceded one, Rui Vitória’s side would love the opportunity to win three out of three. If history offers any indication of what could happen, Belenenses came out on top in this fixture last season, with a 3-1 victory. Which of these two sides will come out on top and take the opportunity to top the Primeira Liga, even if only temporarily?

Sunday’s match card offers two more fixtures that are likely to get a lot of attention.

First, Porto will play host to Moreirense, who are eighth in the league standings with four points from a possible six. A meeting at the Estádio do Dragão will be far from easy, considering the hosts are a perfect two for two, while scoring three and conceding zero. Lopetegui has enjoyed his start at the Portuguese giants, also winning both their Champions League playoff matches against Lille.

After that match up north, Lisbon rivals Benfica and Sporting will lock horns.

The current Portuguese Champions have won both their matches this season, and they’ll aim for a third, while looking to hand the Leões their first defeat of the campaign.

Jorge Jesus’ side started the season well, claiming the Supertaça against Rio Ave. The departures of Rodrigo, Andre Gomes, Garay, Oblak and even Siqueira had fans questioning the manager and the president, but at the moment, things have worked out well. But with Sporting making the short trip down to the Estádio da Luz, current form tends to go out the window when these two sides meet.

Marco Silva’s side earned their first win last week, leaving it very late, after new signing Nani missed a penalty-kick. Fortunately they were able to avoid a second consecutive draw, but having the opportunity to get your first victory against Benfica will be added incentive for last year’s second place finishers.
