As ironic it may sound, Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres had to move to the U.S. in order to earn a place in Piojo Herrera’s squad.

On Thursday, Mexico’s national team coach Miguel Herrera announced a list of six non-Liga MX players that will be called up for the next two friendlies that Mexico will play in the United States in September. Chivas USA’s top goalscorer Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres was included in that list for the first time in his career.

With 14 goals with Chivas USA this season, Erick Torres has become one of the revelation players of the MLS. ‘El Cubo’ joined the Californian club in 2013 after being loaned by former parent club Chivas de Guadalajara.

While still in Mexico, the 21-year-old striker struggled to get regular play as he had a long goal drought with the Guadalajara side, scoring only one goal in 20 appearances. His move to the MLS has been a career-changer for Torres as he’s got his confidence back and has proved his quality as a striker.

Mexico will play against Chile in San Francisco on September 6th and Bolivia in Colorado on September 9th. This will be a golden opportunity for Torres to demonstrate that he deserves a place in the offensive line of Mexico's national team.

Mexican strikers 'Chicharito' Hernández and Raúl Jiménez were not called up by Miguel Herrera for these matches as the manager decided to give them the opportunity to stay with their clubs.

Via Twitter, the player expressed his excitement at being called up saying: “I’m prepared and motivated to wear with pride and honor the Mexican shirt. Thanks for your support and I’ll give my best.”
