Match Preview

Saudi Arabia's struggles at Russia 2018 is expected to compound when they face Uruguay on Wednesday. Juan Antonio Pizzi’s men suffered a 5-0 demolishing against the host nation in the World Cup’s opening game.

Having shown very little urgency in attack as well as possessing an almost non-existing defense, it remains a big question as to how the Asians will cope against coming against their South American opponents. If indeed they fancy the idea of progressing into the knock-out phase of the World Cup, then the Green Falcons will be required to pull off one of the competition's miraculous wins.

Uruguay once again comes into the Group A fixture as the favorites. La Celeste was a shadow of its usual self when they came up against Egypt in the first encounter and only managed to scrap for a 1-0 win via Jose Gimenez's late goal.

Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani who featured in the previous match are expected to lead the line potentially find their scoring boots against the Saudis. The pair, despite being at the end of a host of goalscoring opportunities, failed to convert any against the Egyptians.

In fairness, it was not for the lack of trying as they were mostly kept at bay by the Pharaoh’s compact defense that sat in front of their shot-stopper and Man of the Match winner El Shenawy. With Saudi Arabia’s defense proving to be one of the weakest seen so far at Russia 2018, a demolishing exercise led by the Barcelona and PSG stars could be beckoning.

Pizzi’s side, however, will hope that they can draw enough inspiration from the fact that they are yet to lose to Uruguay in any competition. The first of the two previous meetings – which took place in 2002 - ended in a surprise 3-2 win in favor of the Saudis whereas both countries had to settle for a 1-1 draw in the second encounter in 2014.
