About Super Liga

Super Liga History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Serbian Superliga, or Linglong Tire Superliga for sponsorship reasons, is a football tournament organized by the Serbian Football Association. It was founded in 2006 due to the separation of Serbia and Montenegro, which also led to the dissolution of the Serbia and Montenegro league. Despite its recent creation, UEFA has ranked the Serbian Superliga as the 17th best in the continent via their coefficient system.

This tournament is played year after year by sixteen teams, and even though some of its original clubs go back to the days when the country was part of Yugoslavia, their records are still considered for the overall tally. The league works under a promotion-relegation system, and in order to determine that, all teams face each other twice to play 30 regular-season games. The top eight teams enter a championship playoff, while the other eight enter a relegation playoff, where two teams will be relegated directly and one more will be given the chance to remain a Superliga team via a promotion playoff. The championship playoff, unlike others in Europe, forces teams to face each other once, not twice, which means that each team in the league will play 37 games throughout the season.

There are four spots available to play in European competitions the following year: one for the preliminary stages of the UEFA Champions League (which goes to the champion), and three more to the first three runners-up of the championship round.

The 2018-19 season of the Serbian Superliga concluded with Red Star Belgrade claiming their fifth title. The team from the Serbian capital won the championship with an eight-point margin over Radnicki. Partizan and Cukaricki were the other teams that qualified to the UEFA Europa League besides the runners-up. Speaking about the relegation playoffs, three teams were lowered to the Serbian First League: Zemun and Backa Backa Palanka lost their spots in the Superliga for adding the lowest amount of points in the league, while Dinamo Vranje was relegated by Indija in the promotion playoff.

The 2019-20 season of the Serbian Superliga will begin on July 19, 2019. The final match is scheduled to be played in May 2020. TSC, Javor, and Indjia (winners of the promotion playoff) were promoted from the Serbian First League. TSC will also be making its debut in the Serbian Superliga this season.

Did you know? Red Star Belgrade and Partizan are the only clubs that have been able to win the league title since the league was created in 2016. Current title holders Red Star will try to win a third title in a row in the upcoming season, which would see them trail Partizan by two championships to become the most winning teams in Serbian Superliga history.
