Women's International Champions Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Women’s International Champions Cup is a friendly soccer tournament held each summer. The tournament came to light in an effort to promote women’s football around the world, and to give fans the chance to know some of the top names in women’s football first-hand.

Since only four teams play this competition, the tournament’s format is quite simple. All four teams meet in one venue to play KO games between each other to determine the winner. There is a cash prize for the winner, added to the handsome trophy handed out each year.

The first Women’s ICC edition was played in 2018. The tournament was held in Miami, with North Carolina Courage, PSG, Manchester City and Lyon being the four teams invited to play. NWSL’s North Carolina Courage defeated Lyon in the title match with a 1-0 score to claim the title.

The second tournament, the 2019 WICC, was played in North Carolina, with the defending champions also playing the role of hosts. Lyon, Manchester City and Atlético Madrid Femenino were the other teams involved in this tournament. The title clash saw Lyon getting payback from the previous edition against the North Carolina Courage, winning the title and the cash prize thanks to their 1-0 win.

Just like the men’s edition, the WICC is expected to expand to accommodate more participating teams.
