Sudamericano U-17 History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The South American U-17 Championship, known as Campeonato Sudamericano Sub-17 in Spanish, is a biennial cup competition held for under-17 national teams that are members of CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation. Founded in 1985, the first three editions were U-16 tournaments, with the age limit eventually being increased by a year.

A total of 10 teams participate, with the contestants being split into two groups of five. The top three sides from each group move on to the final stage for a total of six teams. The six remaining participants are then placed into one group in a single round-robin format. The country that collects the most number of points gets crowned the champion. This competition acts as the region’s qualification tournament for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, with the top four teams from the South American U17 Championship earning tickets to the FIFA event.
