About Super Cup

Super Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Belgian Super Cup is an association football club competition played as a single match between the champions of the Belgian First Division A and the winners of the Belgian Cup. It was founded in 1979 by the Belgian Football Association and has been held every year with 1989 being the only exception.

The Belgian Super Cup is played at the beginning of a new league season. If the team who won the Belgian First Division A is the same team that won the Belgian Cup, the runner-up automatically qualifies to participate as the opponent.

Club Brugge, Anderlecht, and Standard Liège rank among the most successful clubs in the history of the Belgian Super Cup. The latter is the first club in history to win the title back to back (1982 and 1983) whereas Anderlecht is the first club to lift the trophy three successive times on three separate occasions (1985 to 1987, 1993 to 1995, and 2012 to 2014).
