About Super League
Super League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Chinese Super League, or CSL, is the most competitive football league in China. This league was established in 2004 and is run by the Chinese Football Association. The CSL is one of the most followed professional leagues in China.
Following the format of most European leagues, which the CSL wants to battle by offering huge amounts of money to star players, the league operates under a promotion-relegation system. The two least successful teams after 30 games are relegated to the Chinese League 1, while the team with the most points wins the title.
16 teams begin each Chinese Super League season. Due to the harsh weather that hits China during the winter, this league kicks off in February and concludes between November and the early days of December.
The Chinese Super League provides access to continental competitions. At the end of the season, three teams earn a spot in the group stage of the AFC Champions League, while one more will fight for their spot in the qualifying rounds.
While the CSL might not be the most eye-catching league in the world, it has become a favored destination for some of the finest names in world football in recent years. Thanks to a massive investment boost in 2015, the league has been home to the likes of Yannick Carrasco, Oscar, Hulk, Paulinho, Cedric Bakambu, Graziano Pele, Stephan El Shaaraway, Salomon Rondon, Marko Arnautovic and Mousa Dembele.
Needless to say, the involvement of these stars have not come cheap. Aside the hefty transfer fees paid to secure their services, most of these players have excessive wages – some rising as high as 450,000 euros.
